Today, you will embark on a quest to learn more about the world of Toni Morrison's Beloved. This quest will include a review of Morrison's life, historical context, and the themes and literary devices that you will encounter in the novel. You will watch fun informational videos, research information on your own, and ultimately leave with a better understanding of the big picture of Beloved!

You can choose to write all of your information down on a sheet of paper, or you can alternatively turn it in to me on Google Classroom under the Web-quest assignment. Remember, you must cite your sources! (Hyperlinks are fine, and even encouraged.) Assignment should be submitted February 2, 2018 by the end of the day. Please use one document for all tasks be sure to label and date each task.

Toni Morrison
Your first task on this quest is to become an expert on the author of Beloved, Toni Morrison. Please note that, Morrison is considered one of the greatest writers of all time, she is your favorite authors, favorite author (and mine). Watch the interviews and listen (or read) the NPR conversation to complete the following assignment.

Historical Context
Alright, so you know a little more about Toni Morrison. Now, what do you know about the world she is referencing throughout the novel? For this task, research the historical context of Beloved. Consider the following topics in your research:
Assignment: Write a well developed response explaining your findings. Response should be at least 1 page. (Reading this text through the historical lens will be a major focus so do some in depth research, it will be critical in your comprehension of the novel). |

Beloved
Your fourth task is to explore the novel itself. I would be lying if I said Beloved is not a challenging text, however, I would never give you anything that I did not think you could handle. Watch the crash course video and the video of Morrison discussing her works. Then, in a well-developed paragraph answer the following question: Based upon the videos and your extensive research, what are your expectations for Beloved? Do you have any predictions about the novel or how you might respond to it? Are you nervous? Excited? Worried? Do you think this is an important text to read? |
